Overview:

The African Liberty Writing Fellowship training program is designed to equip young freedom-minded Africans with the skills needed to be successful in opinion editorial writing and public policy commentary.

This 5-week training is the first step in that process. Each lesson subsequent will become unlocked on a weekly basis.

Each week, you will have access to study materials on one critical component of opinion writing and an assignment prompt. Your assignments will be graded with feedback.

At the end of the fifth week, you will develop an original opinion editorial article of publishable quality, which in addition to your scores from the previous four weeks, determines your official acceptance into the program as a writing fellow.

Outcomes:

By the end of this training you will:

  • Understand the basics of professional opinion editorial writing
  • Know how to simplify complex research findings into a simple opinion editorial
  • Be able to write articles worthy of publication
  • Be familiar with the best practices in public policy review
  • Have the confidence to begin your career as a writer for liberty
  • Write your first op-ed article

FAQs

Is this a degree program?
No. Although the 5-week training is not a degree or a certificate program, it is a valuable step in preparing you for a career in media, journalism, and public policy.


Is the training in person?
No. The 5-week training is 100% online and is only accessible on Learn Liberty.


How much do I pay?
The training is 100% free and voluntary. However, all course materials should not be stored, shared, or transmitted for any purposes other than towards the program (except for those already in the public domain).


Do I get paid?
No. Monetary compensation does not apply during the 5-week training. Only inducted writing fellows can access the conditional monthly writing compensation


Do I become an African Liberty Fellow simply by participating in the 5-week training?
No. You are a trainee while in the 5-week training. Once you are assessed at the end of week five and offered a fellowship position, you are officially recognized as a writing fellow, We expect that you do not present yourself under any African Liberty title, except for ‘trainee,’ during the 5-week training.
